A few days ago, I tried to think about what type of tips I would’ve liked to get when I started playing Minecraft. After a few hours, I came up with this list of 16 Minecraft tips for beginners. Hope you enjoy it!
If you’re new to Minecraft, it can initially be a bit overwhelming. You are thrown into a world without a guide or any other form of instruction. There’s so much to explore and so many things to do, but don’t worry. There are some tips and tricks that can help you get started and make your experience more enjoyable.
Minecraft Tips for Beginners
These Minecraft tips are not just meant to help your character survive the first couple of days. They are meant to help you as a player, enjoy Minecraft’s incredible world in a way that won’t overwhelm you and make every step fun.
1. Start with Survival Mode
It goes without saying. If you’re new to the whole concept of Minecraft, the first tip is to start with what made Minecraft the most successful video game in the world.
I will never forget how excited I was to start my first survival world. I had no idea what to do, and surviving the first night felt like a huge win.
Unfortunately, when I look back at this whole experience, I can’t help but think that an entire house made of bricks might be practical but not as good-looking or comfortable as it could have been.
2. Start Small
Don’t build an 8-story mansion before you built your started house. Don’t build a huge storage room if all you need at the moment is 2-3 double chests.
Start small and upgrade as needed.
3. Explore your Surroundings
I’ll let you in on a little secret: even though exploring the world sounds like the most exciting thing you can do in Minecraft, exploring 700-800 blocks in each direction of your base is just as interesting, and everything you find is within walking distance.
4. Avoid Peaceful
Well, not exactly. The peaceful difficulty is great if you want a chill experience, but having no mobs means no drops, an almost empty nether, no zombie villagers, no dragon, and almost no challenge.
At some point, you are bound to understand that having no challenge at all can be quite boring. Unfortunately, structures that were supposed to spawn with specific mobs that you have already visited won’t spawn them, including igloos, woodland mansions, bastion remnants, and more.
5. Get Inspired
Sometimes you want to play but have no idea what to do, even when you’re very early in the game. Luckily, there are some really great Minecraft survival YouTubers you can follow and get some ideas from.
Follow their survival series for ideas and explanations to help and inspire you. The launch of version 1.20 could be a great opportunity so catch some series at their beginning.
6. Join a Server
Servers are one of the best things in Minecraft. Play in a survival server, or play mini-games with friends. You won’t believe how good can some of the best Minecraft servers be.
7. Scale Up
You can, obviously, live in your starter house even after 1000 in-game days, but part of the fun is to build your real-life dream house in your survival world. The same goes for nine by nine blocks crop farms. You can make every single thing in your Minecraft world epic, even if it serves no real purpose.
8. Automate
After scaling up any of your farms, you want to look into automation. There are very few things in life that are more satisfying than seeing a huge farm harvest itself automatically.
9. Dig Straight Down
You probably heard some say never to dig straight down. It is one of the most popular Minecraft tips, and it has some rationale behind it. You might fall into a tall cave and die, or fall into lava and lose all your items.
That being said, there’s a way you can dig straight down and stay safe. Just stand exactly between two blocks and dig one side each time. That way, if you find yourself on top of a cave, a pool of lava, or even an ancient city, you can tower back up or use a water bucket to go down safely.
10. Don’t Forget to Kill the Dragon
It’s easy sometimes to forget about Minecraft’s in-game objective: kill the ender dragon. It is a challenging battle, no doubt, but there are a couple of things you can do to help you succeed in beating the dragon.
11. Try Other Game Modes
Minecraft has four different game modes, each with its own characteristics. In addition to playing survival, try creative, spectator, and adventure. You can read more about them here.
12. Find Your Thing
There are so many different types of Minecraft players. Some like to stick to the basic Minecraft survival experience, some like building, some love planning and executing complex red stone circuits, and some want to complete the game as fast as possible, grinding for the world record.
Of course, the vast majority enjoy multiple things, but understanding your most “basic” passion will surely help you find others who share it.
13. Join a Community
There are tons of communities of Minecraft players, sharing their passion with each other. Everything from Discord servers, Subreddits, and even forums.
14. Challenge Yourself
Already beat the dragon? Feeling lost? There are tons of other things you can do in Minecraft to re-ignite your enjoyment of your world.
15. Ready for the Next Level? Try Hardcore
Hardcore, unlike some players think, is not a game mode but a difficulty. Nonetheless, it is extremely challenging because it’s locked on hard difficulty, and as soon as you die, the game is over.
16. Never Stop Having Fun
No matter what type of Minecraft player you are, you must not forget that the whole point of Minecraft, and any video game, for that matter, is to have fun. If you don’t enjoy it, pause the game or change things up a bit. Don’t force yourself into playing because you’ll end up avoiding it altogether.
